Hydraulic hoses are made to convey hydraulic fluids to other parts of a hydraulic system, and are used in a wide variety of industrial hydraulic systems. The flexibility of a hydraulic hose facilitates other components to be placed in a manner that allows efficiency and effectiveness.

Selection of a proper hydraulic hose for an application should be based on a few factors.

Size
It is essential to measure the inside and the outside diameters of a hose and the length of the tube. The hydraulic hose OD is also important when you are using hose-support clamps or the hoses are routed through a bulkhead. You should check the individual specifications tables for the ODs in the suppliers’ catalog. When you want to replace a hose assembly, always remember that the new hose should be cut to the same the length as the old one.

Application
Can the selected hydraulic hoses meet the required bend radius? The bend radius, in this case, is the minimum bend radius in inches that a hydraulic hose must match. If the bend radius is exceeded, it results to injuring the hose reinforcement and reduces its durability.

Materials
The material used in a hydraulic system determines the material of the hose that is to be used. Therefore, it is required that you should check the compatibility chart to ensure that the hose compound is compatible with the liquid used in the system. High temperatures, concentration, and fluid contamination affect the chemical compatibility of a hydraulic hose and fluid. Note that, some of the newly invented biodegradable fluids may affect some hydraulic hoses.

Pressure Capabilities
The hydraulic hoses working pressure should always be selected in a manner that it exceeds or is equal to the maximum pressure in the system, including the pressure spikes. If the pressure spikes exceed the published working pressure, they significantly reduce the hose life.

Temperature
Hydraulic hoses are rated with a maximum working temperature that ranges from 200 degrees to 300 degrees fahrenheit. This is usually based on the fluid temperature. If the tubes are exposed to continuous high temperatures, they lose their flexibility. Also, failure to use hydraulic lubricants that have the proper viscosity to hold up during high temperatures accelerates the problem of flexibility. To avoid this, you should always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Hose Ends
When selecting a hydraulic hose, the hose selected must be compatible with the coupling-to-hose mechanical interface. The appropriate coupling thread must be chosen to give a leak-free sealing. There are two categories of coupling; permanent and attachable.

While there exist many manufacturers and varying qualities of hydraulic hose, our expert hose specialists at The Hose Shop have the knowledge and training to help you find the right hydraulic hose for your job.
